How does Mira compare to the regular pill

Both Mira and combined pills offer effective contraception, but they work differently.

Mira is a progestogen-only pill (PoP) with 75mcg desogestrel:

  • Taken daily without breaks.
  • It’s over 99% effective.
  • Available without a prescription.

Where combined pills:

  • Contain at least 30mcg oestrogen + around 150mcg progestogen.
  • Require a 7-day break.
  • Need a doctor’s prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Mira work?

Mira is a progestogen-only pill containing desogestrel, a synthetic hormone that mimics the body's natural progesterone. It helps prevent pregnancy in two key ways:

Prevents ovulation – No egg is released, so sperm have nothing to fertilize.

✔ Thickens cervical mucus – This makes it harder for sperm to reach the uterus.

By combining these effects, Mira provides a highly effective, daily contraceptive option.

Can I use Mira?

Different types of birth control pills work differently for each person. Your choice may depend on convenience, lifestyle, and medical suitability.

Mira (a progestogen-only pill) is not suitable for everyone. You should not take Mira if:

You are allergic to desogestrel or any other ingredient in Mira.

You have hormone-sensitive cancers, such as breast, ovarian, or uterine (endometrial) cancer.

You have or have had jaundice or severe liver disorders, and blood tests show your liver function has not returned to normal.

You have an active blood clot in your legs (deep vein thrombosis – DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism – PE).

You experience unexplained bleeding between periods or after sex—this should be checked by a doctor.

You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.

If you are unsure whether Mira is right for you, speak to a healthcare professional before starting the pill.

What side effects can I expect?

Like any medication, contraceptive pills can cause side effects, but these vary from person to person, and not everyone experiences them.

Healthcare professionals generally recommend sticking with a new pill for at least three months to allow any side effects to subside as it takes time for your body to adjust  If they persist, you may want to explore a different pill or another contraceptive method.

Below are some common side effects for a progestogen-only pill like Mira. If you have concerns, consult a healthcare professional.

- Mood swings

- Headache

- Nausea

- Acne

- Decreased sexual drive (libido)

- Irregular or no periods

- Breast pain

- Increased body weight

What can make Hana less effective?

- Vomiting: If you vomit within 3–4 hours of taking your pill, it may not be absorbed properly. Take another dose as soon as possible to ensure effectiveness.

- Missed pill (less than 24 hours): Take the missed pill as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two pills in one day. You can then continue as normal.

- Missed more than one pill: Resume taking your pill as soon as you remember. However, use condoms for the next 7 days as an extra precaution.
